Like Hemingway, Conch Cruisers and the Conch
Republic, the legacy of the wreckers are an indelible part of the
history and culture of Key West.
Many of Key West’s finest historic
structures were built by the wreckers.
Being interested in all things Key West Jeff
was of course interested in the wreckers, too.
Wreckers salvaged goods from ships
that foundered on the nearby reefs. Some say the wreckers
deliberately lured ships onto the shoals. Whatever the truth, Key
West became the wealthiest city in the United States.
There’s a Wreckers Museum in Key West and also a series of “Wreckers
Races” –sailing races---seasonally in Key West. Jeff, Susie and I
often participated.
